Tongues:
Speaking the Wonderful Works of God!
Thanks for your interest.
First, all Christians can speak in tongues. Is Jesus our Resurrected Lord? Can we do all things in Christ? After the day of Pentecost, we are no longer told to tarry for it. By divine working, you too can go through the mechanisms of speech (moving your lips and mouth, breathing through the voice box) to speak a language you do not understand to speak in tongues. You can do it: simply do not provide the words: the gift of God in you will provide either a tongue of men or of angels.
Speaking in tongues is always prayer and praise to God. If you're Christian you can do it, go ahead. The first work the Christian Church did was speak in tongues, and while it's a result of salvation rather than a means of salvation, it is still a wonderful tool for prayer, praise, and supplication.
Go ahead and try if you will.
If you did it, praise God.
If you're nervous or not convinced you can, and did not, that's okay, read on. I'll try to find a happy medium between the proper information and brevity.
First the sum of the matter: Speaking in tongues is a working of the gift of God, holy spirit, in the Christian. When you confess Jesus as Lord and believe God raised him from the dead, you are saved, (Rom. 10:9-11,) and you are blessed with ALL spiritual blessings (Eph 1:3.)
This is a gift of grace: works have nothing to do with this gift (Eph. 2:8-9)
Once you have it the saying is true: "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." (Phillipians 4:13.)
This includes speaking in tongues.
What is tongues? Is it a gift? No. The "gift" is "spirit," holy spirit. Acts 2:38 literally reads "you shall receive the gift the holy holy spirit" in the Greek texts.
Does this mean God is giving us Himself?
No. God is Holy, and God is Spirit (John 4:24.) Therefore, God refers to Himself as THE Holy Spirit.
But when we as Christians are saved, we become "sons" through the gift of holy spirit. Beloved, NOW are we the sons of God. (I John 3:2.) We have received the "spirit of adoption." (Rom. 8:15.) It is this "spirit of adoption" that makes us sons. How? Because it is the spirit from god, His gift of grace, made in His image: holy spirit.
You might say we are with God's spiritual DNA: holy spirit.
And with this holy spirit came abilities and power. And when we "exercise" these abilities in the spiritual realm, things happen in the physical realm. These things are called "manifestations" or "shining forths" ("phanerosis") in I Cor. 12:7. Nine are listed.
"Tongues, " "Interpretation of Tongues," "Prophesy," "Word of Wisdom," "Word of Knowledge," "Faith," (Spiritual faith going beyond senses trust,) "Discerning of Spirit," "Miracles," and "Gifts of Healings."
(This has been explained as "not 'gift' of healing, but 'gifts' of... each healing is a gift to the one healed.)
"But all these things operates the one and the same spirit dividing separately to each according as he wills." (Berry's Interlinear.)
The "he" that wills is the "each." What does that mean?
It means that if you want to manifest the gift of God, that spiritual ability, YOU have to do it. You have to take appropriate action according to your will, according to YOUR decision to act.
You can speak in tongues if you have confessed Jesus as your Lord, and accept the truth that God has raised him from the dead.
(You can also have spiritual strength for your faith, can prophesy, can interpret with other believers what you just spoke in tongues, can work miracles and minister supernatural healing, and can receive revelation from God, called Word of Knowledge, Word of Wisdom, and Discerning of Spirit, and probably have done some of these things without labeling them as such. But that's out of the scope of this study.)
Now go ahead. You can do it. You too can speak in tongues, because you too have received all spiritual blessings, and you too can do all godly things through Christ who strengthens you, and by the spirit the gift of God in you, for you are a son, or a daughter, of God, and God is able to bring forth in you above all you may ask or speak.
Speak in tongues, go ahead.
You won't recognize the words you speak. They may be gibberish to you. They are, however, the tongue, the language, of men or angels somewhere in time.
But go ahead, they are words of praise and thanksgiving to our God.
Go ahead, if you will, speak in tongues. You force out of your mouth words God's gift puts in there.
God gives the words, but you do the speaking. Do it, trust God for the words to be there.
God bless. If you have any further questions, contact us at our e-mail site gritrid@aol.com, subject:speaking in tongues.
God bless you and may He always grant you above all you may ask or think.
